Five Sounds Your Car Should Never Make
Your vehicle talks to you long before something major goes wrong. The problem is that most people tune those sounds out because the car still seems to drive fine. But certain noises are your vehicle’s version of raising a hand and saying something is not right. Here are five sounds you should never ignore.
The first one is grinding. If you hear grinding while braking, your pads are likely worn right down and metal is scraping against metal. That turns a simple brake job into a bigger repair if you leave it alone.
The second is squealing or squeaking. A light squeal can be a brake wear indicator doing its job, but squeaks coming from under the hood often mean a belt is worn, slipping or losing tension. Belts are inexpensive to replace. Letting them fail can cause serious damage.
The third is knocking. A rhythmic knock usually means a loose or worn suspension component. Sometimes it is a ball joint, sometimes a control arm bushing. Either way, these parts affect safety and handling. When they go, they go fast.
The fourth is a loud clunk when shifting or accelerating. That can point to motor mounts, transmission issues or a failing CV joint. These are not problems you want to discover the hard way.
The fifth is a high pitched whine. This often comes from a failing pump or a bearing that is starting to seize.
If your vehicle is making a new sound and it does not feel familiar, trust your ears. Catching noises early keeps costs low and keeps you safe on the road.
