When Should You Switch Your Winter Tires in Ontario?

Every spring in Ontario, drivers start asking the same question. When is the right time to switch from winter tires back to all season or summer tires?

It is a simple question, but the timing actually matters more than many people realize.

Winter tires are designed specifically for cold temperatures. The rubber compounds used in winter tires stay softer when temperatures drop below about seven degrees Celsius. That softer rubber helps the tires grip icy or snowy roads much better than regular tires.

Once temperatures start consistently climbing above that range, winter tires begin to behave differently.

In warmer weather, the softer rubber in winter tires wears down much faster. The tires can also feel less stable when cornering or braking on dry pavement.

That is why most automotive experts recommend switching back to all season or summer tires once daily temperatures consistently stay above seven degrees Celsius.

In Eastern Ontario, this usually happens sometime between late March and mid April, depending on the year. Of course, spring weather can be unpredictable, so many drivers prefer to wait until the risk of overnight frost or snow has mostly passed.

Switching tires too early can leave drivers vulnerable if a late snowstorm hits. Waiting too long, however, means the winter tires wear down faster than they should.

Another important reason to change tires in spring is to inspect them for winter damage. Snow, ice, salt, and rough road conditions can take a toll on tire condition over several months.

When the tires come off the vehicle, it becomes much easier to check for uneven wear patterns, cracks in the rubber, or small punctures that may have occurred during winter driving.

Technicians can also inspect wheel alignment during the seasonal tire change. Winter potholes can easily knock a vehicle slightly out of alignment, which may not be immediately noticeable to the driver.

If the alignment is off, tires can begin wearing unevenly and may need to be replaced sooner than expected.

Seasonal tire changes are also a great time to rotate tires if needed. Rotating tires helps ensure they wear evenly and last longer overall.

Many drivers store their winter tires for the summer months. Proper storage helps extend the life of the tires so they are ready to go again when colder weather returns.

Tires should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Ideally they should also be cleaned before storage to remove road salt and debris that can slowly degrade rubber.

Some drivers choose to store their tires directly at the garage where the changeover is performed. This makes the seasonal switch much easier and ensures the tires are kept in proper conditions.

Tires are one of the most important safety components on any vehicle. They are the only part of the car that actually touches the road.

Making sure your tires are appropriate for the season and in good condition can dramatically improve vehicle handling, braking performance, and overall safety.

Spring is the perfect time to make that change and ensure your vehicle is ready for the warmer months ahead.
