What Potholes Can Really Do to Your Car

Every spring in Ontario, the same thing happens. The snow melts, the roads dry out, and suddenly drivers start noticing just how many potholes appeared over the winter.

Some potholes are small enough to avoid without much thought. Others seem to appear overnight and can catch drivers completely off guard. Hitting one at the wrong angle or at higher speeds can feel like a serious jolt, and sometimes it leaves drivers wondering whether any damage was done.

The truth is, potholes can affect more parts of your vehicle than most people realize.

When a car hits a pothole, the impact travels directly through the tires into the suspension system. The suspension is designed to absorb shocks from uneven road surfaces, but deep potholes can push that system beyond what it normally handles.

One of the most common issues caused by potholes is wheel alignment problems. Your vehicle’s alignment keeps the wheels pointed in the correct direction and ensures the tires make even contact with the road.

A hard hit from a pothole can knock the alignment slightly out of place. Sometimes the change is small enough that drivers barely notice at first. Over time, however, misalignment can lead to uneven tire wear and steering that feels off center.

Drivers often notice the car pulling slightly to one side or the steering wheel no longer sitting straight while driving down a flat road.

Tires themselves can also suffer damage from potholes. When a tire drops into a deep hole and hits the edge of the pavement, the sudden impact can cause internal damage to the tire structure.

Sometimes the damage shows up as a visible bulge on the sidewall. Other times it may lead to slow air leaks or uneven tire wear. Even if the tire looks fine from the outside, internal damage can weaken the tire and increase the risk of a blowout later.

Suspension components are another area that can take a hit. Parts like shocks, struts, control arms, and ball joints all work together to keep your vehicle stable and comfortable while driving.

Repeated impacts from rough roads or potholes can loosen or wear down these components. Drivers may begin to notice clunking sounds when going over bumps or a vehicle that feels less stable than it used to.

Sometimes the ride becomes noticeably rougher, especially on uneven pavement.

Wheel rims can also be affected. Alloy wheels in particular can bend when they hit deep potholes. Even a slight bend can lead to vibration while driving, especially at highway speeds.

In some cases drivers feel a steady vibration through the steering wheel or the seat of the vehicle.

While potholes are difficult to avoid entirely, there are a few things drivers can do to reduce the risk of damage.

Keeping your tires properly inflated is one of the simplest ways to protect your vehicle. Tires that are underinflated are more vulnerable to damage when hitting potholes because they cannot absorb impacts as effectively.

Maintaining a safe following distance also helps drivers see road hazards earlier. This gives you more time to slow down or safely avoid potholes that might appear suddenly.

If you do hit a pothole hard enough to feel a strong jolt, it is always a good idea to pay attention to how your vehicle behaves afterward. Changes in steering, new noises, or unusual vibrations can all be signs that something was affected.

Spring is one of the busiest seasons for suspension and alignment inspections because winter roads can quietly wear down vehicles over time.

Catching small issues early often prevents bigger repairs later. Something as simple as a quick alignment check can save drivers from replacing tires prematurely or dealing with larger suspension repairs down the road.
